Meet Sergeant Aaron Atwood: Our Expert Composer & Professional Music Educator
Aaron Atwood’s journey in music is a testament to the principles of discipline and artistic dedication championed by Warrior Musician. As a leading member of our composing staff, his expertise in creating and arranging music provides an invaluable resource for our community.
Sergeant Aaron Atwood's journey in music began at a young age, immersed in a family of musicians and classical piano. His passion for creating music led him to explore the French horn and music notation software, eventually paving the way for a distinguished career as a professional music educator and composer.
A Foundation in Marine Corps Music
Atwood enlisted in the Marines in 2006, where his talents were quickly recognized. While serving with the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band in Okinawa, he received his first arranging request as a Marine Corps musician. This early experience set the stage for a career dedicated to musical excellence.
Academic Pursuits and Continued Excellence
After his first enlistment, Atwood enrolled at Western Connecticut State University to major in Music Performance. While there, he studied abroad and auditioned for prestigious ensembles like the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He continues to hone his skills, creating custom arrangements and preparing for his return to active duty as a musician.
A Welcoming Environment for Composers
Atwood’s return to the Marines led him to the Marine Forces Reserve Band in New Orleans, a supportive community for musicians who want to compose and arrange. His arranging abilities flourished, with one of his pieces becoming a popular choice for the woodwind quintet. We welcome all aspiring community music educators to explore our programs.
Creating a Timeless Arrangement
In 2018, while with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, Sergeant Atwood was asked to create an arrangement of “Amazing Grace” for a memorial ceremony. He took the initiative and created a simple yet powerful arrangement that has been used by various brass quintets, a testament to his skill in custom music arranging.
Collaborations With the US Army
In 2021, Atwood transferred to the US Army, joining the 77th Army Band. His arrangement of “Amazing Grace” was even modified to include a string ensemble for the funeral of Apollo X astronaut Tom Stafford, showcasing his adaptability. His work as a composer continues to create lasting impressions.
A Thousand Performances and Counting
Sergeant Atwood’s career has been marked by an incredible number of performances. While serving with the Training and Doctrine Command Band, he surpassed one thousand performances in his capacity as a military musician. His expertise as a professional music educator is a valuable asset to any aspiring musician.
